history

The castle of the same name rises above the small Arcadian mountain village of Karitena . In 1254 the castle, one of the most powerful of its time, was built by the Frankish conquerors under Hugo von Bruyére . Karitena became the center of one of the twelve Frankish baronies in the Peloponnese. Almost 70 years later, however, it fell to the Byzantines . The Greek freedom fighters under Theodoros Kolokotronis were able to conquer the castle from the Turks in 1821.

The castle

The remains of the outer wall ring lead through an arched doorway to the two-part castle. The castle courtyard, cisterns, magazines and the hall with Romanesque arched windows as well as remains of an even older tower are present.
