Karitena ( Greek Καρίταινα ( f. Sg. )) Is a local community in the municipality of Megalopoli in the highlands of Arcadia in the Peloponnese in Greece with 379 inhabitants. Until 2010 it was the seat of the municipality of Gortyna , which was incorporated into Megalopoli. In addition to the eponymous village (232 inhabitants), the hamlets Kalyvakia (19 inhabitants) and Karvounaris (23 inhabitants) belong to the local community.
geography
Karitena is located at 482 m above sea level in the Arcadian mountains, above the Alfios Gorge. The village is located on a saddle, over which you can get from the Megalopoli plateau to the west coast of the Peloponnese.
history
The existence of an ancient forerunner of the settlement is not certain. At the time of the Frankish rule , the place was secured with a fortress, which was conquered by the Byzantines and Ottomans in the course of history . Despite some attempts, the castle was never captured by the Venetians . In the Greek War of Independence of 1821 the place played a major role, it is the hometown of the freedom fighter Theodoros Kolokotronis .
Attractions
In Karitena there is a fortress from Frankish times, which was built in 1254 on the western hill above the city. Today only the remains of the complex are preserved (outer walls). The facility can be reached on foot, and entry is free. A Byzantine church dedicated to St. Nicholas from the 17th century is located at the village's cemetery. To the south of the village there is a Franconian bridge over the Alfios river.
