Burgberg Chapel (2009)

The Burgbergkapelle (also: Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher ) is a small sandstone chapel on Erlanger Burgberg , just a few steps away from the festival area of the Bergkirchweih . It is assigned to the district of the Evangelical Lutheran Old Town Church .

history

It was built, as can be deduced from the structural form, probably in the 15th century. This makes it the oldest surviving building in the city. The first documentary mention dates back to 1709, when the simple ashlar building in the style of a field chapel was probably renewed. The path leading past the chapel was called the sacred moat in the 18th century .

The place of worship together with the infirmary opposite since the 14th century formed a structural unit. The hermitage was outside the city walls on the road to Bayreuth and was probably responsible for looking after the sick.

In 1818 the mirror manufacturer Johann Jakob Zephanias Fischer acquired the Burgbergkapelle from the old town parish, which he bought back in 1926 from his heirs . Major renovations took place in 1927 and 1985.
