The Burgsee is a lake that belongs to the city of Schleswig . It is located in the west of the urban area and covers an area of 31.83 hectares . This includes the artificially enlarged castle island with Gottorf Castle , which measures 10.47 hectares. This leaves 21.38 hectares of water. In the north and east, the island is only separated from the mainland (Lollfuß district) by the 20 meter wide moat.
The lake was the most inland part of the Schlei until 1582 , but was then separated from it by Duke Adolf by a nearly 100 meter long dam. This Gottorfer Damm is 28 meters wide today. A four-lane road leads over it.
