The castle Schlösschen was a fortification of unknown time between Tiefenort and Unterrohn on the steep bank of the Werra in today's Wartburg district in Thuringia .
Location and function
The castle site of the summit castle at 240 m above sea level. NN is about 10 to 15 m above the Werra floodplain. It is located at a ford and is about 4 kilometers (as the crow flies) from the Krayenburg , to which there is a line of sight.
description
The castle has a trapezoidal floor plan with rounded corners and is surrounded on all sides by a wall up to one meter high (in relation to the inner surface). The area marked in this way is used as pasture for cattle. The only access is on the northeast side (about 50 m in length). It was covered by a crescent-shaped wall and ditch fortification with a second, but already extensive, filled ditch. The south side has a length of 170 m, it is secured by a steep drop to the Werra, the east side also has a steep slope, it is about 140 m long. The west side forms a slight curve and follows a gorge-like valley cut with a steep slope, through which a dirt road leads to the community of Tiefenort today. From this field path, a field path that turns right to the castle and another path that leads diagonally towards Oberrohn branches off.
Archaeological research
The remains of the castles, considered to be parts of a wall and moat fortification, were measured in the 1960s by the archaeological monument curator G. Sennhenn during a systematic inventory of the castles in the old district of Bad Salzungen.
