The Altkalen castle wall , a district of the Altkalen municipality in the Rostock district , is located on the south-eastern edge of the village on Altkalener See.
The remains of the former Niederungsburg are also known as the Schlossberg. There is evidence that the facility was built by the Slavs . In the Christian Middle Ages the area was used as a German fortress. Prince Heinrich Borwin III. After 1236 zu Rostock had a new, heavily fortified castle built in place of the old Slavic castle. In 1253 the castle settlement was granted the town charter of Luebeck. However, the place was given up as a city in 1281 and relocated to today's Neukalen. Altkalen fell back to the village. Today you can see a plateau up to 4 meters high with a diameter of up to 100 meters from the former castle. Wall and stone remains are no longer recognizable. The Altkalen castle wall is deceptively similar to the Möllenhagen castle wall near Waren.
