The castle wall of Werder , a district of the municipality of Penzlin in the Mecklenburg Lake District , is also commonly referred to as the English Garden . It is a Slavic rampart in the form of a one-piece fortification , which was built on a peninsula in the Great City Lake . By creating a wide ditch to the mainland, the castle was on an artificially created island. The two-gate castle comes from the Yugoslav period of the 11th / 12th Century and was used as a fortification in the subsequent early German period. During excavations at the end of the 19th century, a larger stone building and a well were found . There are no written records about the system.
