The Buryat silver owl ( Autographa buraetica ), sometimes also called Siberian gold owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 36 to 42 millimeters. The forewing upper side is gray-brown to chestnut brown in color and slightly marbled. The silver-white shimmering, teardrop-shaped blemish, which resembles the gamma from the Greek alphabet, is relatively small and sometimes divided. The middle field around the silver blemishes is mostly darkened red-brown, the outer transverse line rich in contrast and clear. The upper side of the hind wing is colored light gray-brown and shows a slightly darkened area in front of the outer seam. There is a dense tuft of hair on the head of the butterfly. The body is furry and has other smaller tufts of hair.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are yellow-green in color. They show thin white, interrupted secondary lines, small white dots, a whitish side stripe and a few short black hairs. The spiracles are small, oval, colored white and bordered in black.

Similar species

The species is very similar to the Ziest silver owl ( Autographa pulchrina ), which is usually lighter and more reddish in color in overall appearance . The iota silver owl ( Autographa jota ) is slightly larger and usually predominantly pink-brown in color, while the autographa mandarina is usually darker and shows a large gamma symbol. In North America, Autographa californica and Autographa pseudogamma are similar to the Buryat silver owl. Because of the similarity with the aforementioned species, a genital morphological examination can be used for a reliable determination.

Distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of the Buryat silver owl stretches from northeastern Europe and Fennoscandinavia via Russia to Central Asia. It is also found on Kamchatka , Sakhalin , the Kuril Islands as well as in Korea and Japan . It can also be found in the northeast of North America ( Alaska , Yukon ). It is noteworthy that the species in Europe has continued to expand from Russia to the west since the 1980s. First discoveries from Brandenburg were reported in 1985 and Austria in 1991 . The species prefers to colonize moist forests, mountain slopes, river banks and swamp areas.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation between June and August. They are nocturnal and fly to artificial light sources . The leaves of a large number of lower plants serve as a food source for the caterpillars. The caterpillars overwinter.
