Burkhard Stephan

Burkhard Stephan (born March 4, 1932 in Sebnitz ) is a German ornithologist .

Life

After completing his commercial training, Stephan completed a degree in biology at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he received his doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. sc. Nat.) In 1964 with the dissertation Comparative investigations on the extremities of cuckoo birds <Cuculi, Aves> . In 1959 he became an employee and in 1968 a curator at the ornithological department of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin . From 1972 to 1977 he was deputy director of the Institute for Systematic Zoology at the Museum für Naturkunde and from 1978 to 1982 he was deputy director of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. In 1988 he taught as an associate professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin. From 1994 until his retirement in 1997 he was head of the ornithological department of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.

Stephan's fields of work include functional morphology (in particular osteology and spring science), the evolution and tribal history of birds, ancient bird research and avifaunistics . Stephan published several non-fiction books, over 240 scientific and popular scientific articles and over 60 translations.

In 1971, together with his colleague Karlheinz Fischer, he described the extinct bird species Grus cubensis , Nesotrochis picapicensis and Dolichonyx kruegeri from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Pío Domingo Cave in Cuba .
