The Burnett Plaza , rarely, First United Tower , is a skyscraper in Fort Worth , Texas .

History and architecture

The 40-story building is 173 meters (567 ft ) tallest in the city and the tallest building in Texas outside of Houston , Dallas and Austin . Construction of the Burnett Plaza began in 1981. After two years of construction, it was completed in 1983. The Medical Arts Building originally stood on the property at 801 Cherry Street, completed in 1927. The Beaux-Arts-style building was blown up on July 1, 1973 and, at 85.3 meters, was the tallest building ever in Fort Worth was demolished.

The plaza was designed by the architects Preston M. Geren & Associates, Sikes, Jennings & Kelly. The interior design was carried out by Halbach-Dietz Architects. The hallmark of the building, which was designed in the typical style of postmodernism of the early 1980s, are some elevator shafts, which, slightly indented, interrupt the rows of windows of the west facade and all differ in their height and the number of floors approaching. Due to this design there are also slight influences from Brutalism in the building. The property takes up an entire block of streets, while the building, used exclusively for office purposes, is to the west. The rest of the plaza is taken up by Burnett Park, a paved complex with lush vegetation, which also houses the 50 ft (15 meter) high aluminum sculpture Man With a Briefcase by American artist Jonathan Borofsky .

Burnett Plaza serves as the headquarters of the Burnett Oil Company. Other tenants include Worth National Bank, the oil company Burlington Resources and the law firm Thompson & Knight. In March 1991, the Haynes and Boone company moved out of the complex, which had also served as its headquarters until then. Burnett Plaza is currently owned by real estate agency TIER REIT, Inc.
