Burvagn ( Rhaeto-Romanic name in the idiom Surmiran , German outdated Burwein ) is a fraction of the municipality of Surses in Oberhalbstein . It is located at Cunter at 1182 m. ü. M. and is the first settlement in the valley from the north.

The hamlet was first mentioned in 1375 as Prauwein and in 1452 as Bruweyn .

Infrastructure

The originally agricultural settlement on the road to the Julier Pass consists of five houses, most of which have been used as holiday apartments since 2000. Two residents live in Burvagn all year round.

To the south of the village lies the Julia der Lai (= lake) Burvagn in a long reservoir .

history

In 1786, the carter Dosch found a gold and silver treasure from ancient Roman times in a field. It consisted of bracelets, fibulae and a perfume box, as well as Gaulish and ancient Roman coins. Dosch sold the jewelry to a goldsmith in Chiavenna . Ten coins were later returned to the Rhaetian Museum in Chur in Graubünden , and another part to the State Museum in Zurich .

In Vaznoz near Burvagn there was a gallows of the late medieval and early modern judicial community of Oberhalbstein. Its remains were discovered in 1830.

church

The chapel is under the patronage of Valentin of Raetia and was first mentioned in 1583. After the turmoil in Graubünden , it was rebuilt in 1662 by the Surses Capuchin Mission in the Baroque style and consecrated on June 24, 1663.
