A butter dish is a container made of plastic , stainless steel , porcelain , glass or the like for storing butter .

Storing it in the butter dish extends the shelf life of the butter and offers protection against foreign odors and small animals such as insects. A butter dish can also be used to serve butter (as a decorative dinnerware).

The first butter dishes were mostly round, made of materials such as earthenware and were not only used for storage, but also as dinnerware . Accordingly, there were sometimes elaborate decorations or paintings.

When the sale of unpackaged butter as bulk goods largely ended , the shape also changed and the cans were often dimensioned for a conventional 250-gram piece.

The butter dish today consists of two parts:

  • The bottom is usually a flat, elongated bowl with a recess that is the size of a piece of butter. High-quality butter dishes have thicker bases, which store the cold longer and thus keep the butter cool longer outside the refrigerator .
  • The lid is usually a high domed dome or a rectangular attachment that is placed over the butter and engages in a guide that is worked into the bottom of the can. The lid is usually only loosely attached. Some butter dishes also offer an airtight seal using a plastic ( silicone ) seal .
