Butz'aj Sak Chiik (born November 14, 459 , † probably 501 ) was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Maya city of Palenque . He ruled from July 28, 487 until his death.

Origin and family

Butz'aj Sak Chiik was born on November 14, 459 ( long count 9.1.4.5.0, calendar round 12 Ahaw 13 Sak). Nothing is known about his family relationship with his predecessor Casper II . His successor Ahkal Mo 'Nahb I. could have been his brother.

Reign

He ascended the throne on July 28, 487 (9.2.12.6.18, 3 Etz'nab 11 Xul). A tablet from Temple XVII in Palenque, which was made in the 7th century, mentions the founding of Lakamha (the Maya name Palenques) for his reign. The inscription should be understood to mean that Butz'aj Sak Chiik moved the mansion from Toktahn , a previously unidentified place with which his predecessors were in contact, to Palenque. The tablet also mentions Ahkal Mo 'Nahb I in the same context, which indicates that he already had considerable power during the rule of his presumed brother, possibly even ruling together with him. After the death of Butz'aj Sak Chiik in 501 he took sole control.
