Byrgius is an impact crater on the front of the moon , southeast of Darwin crater and northwest of Vieta .

The crater rim is heavily eroded. On the western edge of the crater is the secondary crater Byrgius A , which shows a striking system of rays .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Swiss watchmaker and astronomer Jost Bürgi .
