Vieta is an impact crater on the western edge of the front of the moon , west of Mare Humorum , northwest of Fourier and south of Henry . The heavily eroded crater shows traces of extensive landslides, especially in the south, while the crater wall is partially leveled in the north.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French mathematician François Viète .
