Byumba

Byumba is a city in northern Rwanda . The city is located about 60 kilometers north of the capital Kigali and has about 66,500 inhabitants.

Since the territorial reform of January 1, 2006, Byumba has been the capital of the Northern Province and the Gicumbi District . The Northern Province was created in 2006 from the amalgamation of Ruhengeri Province , parts of Kigali Province and Byumba Province , of which Byumba had been the capital until then.

An SOS Children's Village has been located about 7 kilometers from the city since 1997 .
