C³i (also C cubed I or C3i ) is a music band from Hamburg .

history

After the Hamburg punk band Torpedo Moscow broke up in 1986, their bassist Arne “Uncool Sam” Wagner and drummer Marc Wills formed the band together with guitarist Rudi Raschberger. Wagner and Raschberger already played together in the Hamburg punk rock band Kotzbrocken (1978–1981).

When looking for a band name, the writer Peter Glaser suggested the name "C³i". This is an abbreviation of the US military program " Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence ". The formulaic spelling C³i is also, not untypical for US military codes, in a metaphysical context and describes the seeing eye in the pyramid (see cubed eye), known from the American dollar bill (" eye of providence ").

Marc Wills, who was born in the USA and died in 1996, left the band in 1986 to devote himself to various hardcore formations and projects. In the meantime he drummed with the US punk band False Prophets , the Hamburger Blumen am Arsch der Hölle around their singer Jens Rachut and the band 100% Diskretion, also from Hamburg . Later he occasionally helped out at concerts by C³i.

Wagner and Raschberger were able to win over drummer Torsten Berndt to record the first demo recordings with him in 1986. These were produced by slime guitarist Christian Mevs in his studio.

Together with Berndt, now a permanent drummer, the band toured throughout Germany and beyond in the Netherlands and Denmark. Berndt left C³i in 1987 and was replaced by Kai Burmester.

In 1987 the former golden lemon drummer Ale Dumbsky offered C³i a record release on his newly founded label Buback .

The album Start was released in 1988 with 11 tracks. The pieces Lights of the Groszstadt and No One Remains came from the demo recordings with Berndt on drums and were partially supplemented. Christian Mevs also produced these recordings in his Gas Records studio. The cover for the album was designed by the painter Daniel Richter and the photos were shot by ex-Screamer bassist Ulrich Mevs.

Even before the record was released, Rudolph Naomi, who later became the KMFDM drummer, joined the band. Several gigs followed with him, but the band decided to break up C³i and cancel a planned promo tour for the not yet released LP.

In 2012, Raschberger and Wagner reformed C³i. With the former antibody drummer Phill Hill, they played the reunion gig in Störtebeker Hafenstrasse. Since then the band has played live continuously.

In 2013, 2014 and 2015 C³i recorded a good dozen new pieces in Ritchy Fondermann's K-Klangstudio in Hamburg. Christian Mevs, who has meanwhile moved to Berlin, invited C³i to a recording session in his Salon Berlin Studio in 2015. The pieces Like a ghost and facade were created .

In 2014 the band released the vinyl single "wie ein Geist / Not in a good mood".

On April 7, 2016, the band signed a record deal with Ritchy Fondermann and Carsten Seidel's K-Klangträger label. The LP album Kurz after was released here on January 27, 2017 . This includes the songs produced by Mevs and Fondermann . In terms of content, this record consists of unreleased pieces from the 80s, which were reconstructed, rearranged and re-recorded using old practice room, demo and live tapes, as well as material that developed in the years between dissolution and re-formation . The majority of the 14 pieces were more up-to-date and reflect all the impressions, experiences, influences and inspirations of the bands in which Hill , Wagner and Raschberger played in the meantime. Therefore the piece vinyl represents a rather comprehensive retrospective of the past years and decades. The graphic design comes from Ulrich Mevs, who also participated in the first LP start .

At the end of 2018, Phill Hill decided to leave C³i. His position on drums was now taken over by ex Witte XP, Guts, Lobomobile drummer Jens Brandl.
