Cândido Van-Dúnem

Cândido Pereira dos Santos Van-Dúnem is an Angolan officer of the Angolan Armed Forces (Forças Armadas Angolanas) and politician of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA).

Life

Cândido Pereira dos Santos Van-Dúnem completed an officer training after school and then worked as an officer in the Angolan armed forces (Forças Armadas Angolanas) . He graduated with a degree in military science (Licenciado em Ciências Militares) . After serving as military advisor to the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations in New York City between 2000 and 2004 , he served as defense and security policy advisor to President José Eduardo dos Santos between 2005 and 2017 . At the same time, he acted during his tenure in the cabinet of Prime Minister António Paulo Kassoma from September 30, 2008 to February 5, 2010 as Deputy Minister for National Defense.

After the abolition of the office of Prime Minister in the course of a constitutional amendment on February 3, 2010, Cândido Van-Dúnem was appointed to the government of President José Eduardo dos Santos on February 5, 2010 and took over the office of Minister for National Defense (Ministro da Defesa Nacional) . In the course of this cabinet formation, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos took over the office of Vice-President, which was created in place of the abolished office of Prime Minister. Furthermore, it was Carlos Alberto Lopes new finance minister. He held the post of Defense Minister until April 23, 2013, after which João Lourenço succeeded him. As part of this government reshuffle , he took over the post of Minister for Former Fighters and Veterans of the Fatherland (Ministro dos Antigos combatentes e Veteranos da Pátria) on April 23, 2013 , which he held until the end of President dos Santos' term of office on September 26, 2017 held.

On January 19, 2018, Van-Dúnem became a member of the National Assembly (Assembleia Nacional), replacing Carlos Alberto Ferreira Pinto on the list of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA ) . There he is a member of the 1st parliamentary commission (1ª Comissão: Assuntos Constitucionais e Jurídicos) , which is responsible for constitutional matters and law.
