Cândido de Figueiredo

Cândido de Figueiredo (born September 19, 1846 in Lobão da Beira , † September 26, 1925 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet, Romanist , Lusitanist , grammarian and lexicographer.

Life

Figueiredo studied law in Coimbra and established himself as a lawyer in Lisbon in 1876. He held various functions in the school inspection, as well as the judiciary and civil administration. From 1893 he worked for Bernardino Machado . He was a corresponding member of several academies in Portugal and Brazil.

His dictionary of Portuguese , which has had numerous editions since 1899, is important. In addition, he wrote language didactic and language maintenance works, as well as educational works on literature, history, geography and medicine, as well as his own poetry and prose.
