César Barja

César Barja (born October 1, 1890 in Guitiriz , Lugo Province , † June 17, 1951 in Los Angeles ) was an American Romance and Hispanic scholar of Spanish origin.

Life

Barja grew up in Galicia and studied law in Santiago de Compostela , Leipzig (1912–1914) and Madrid (graduated in 1915). From 1916 to 1917 he continued the philology studies he had begun in Leipzig at Harvard University and in 1917 became an instructor for Spanish at Connecticut College . Then he was an instructor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (1920-1921), Assistant Professor at Smith College (1921-1924) and from 1925 Lecturer at the University of California at Los Angeles . There he became an Associate Professor in 1927 and was Full Professor of Spanish from 1930 until his death. In 1931 he obtained US citizenship.

Barja published the magazine Modern Language Forum from 1934 to 1937 . In 1947 he became a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española .
