César Maia

César Epitácio Maia (born July 18, 1945 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian businessman and politician. He was three times mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro, from 1993–1997, 2001–2005 and 2005–2009 for the PDMB and later the PFL , now Democratas (DEM). From February 1, 1987 to March 15, 1992 he was a member of his home state Rio de Janeiro in the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress . Since January 1, 2013, he has been a councilor in Rio de Janeiro.

César Maia was born in the Copacabana district. He belonged to the Communist Party of Brazil and opposed the military dictatorship . As he was persecuted by the regime, he fled to Chile . There he studied economics at the Universidad de Chile together with other Brazilian exiles . In 1973 he returned to his homeland.

In his political career he changed party membership six times.

Private

Maia is married to Mariangeles Ibarra Maia from Chile. Their son Rodrigo Maia is president of the Democratas .
