César Tiempo

César Tiempo , actually Israel Zeitlin (born March 3, 1906 in Yekaterinoslav , † October 24, 1980 in Buenos Aires ), was an Argentine journalist, actor, screenwriter and writer of Ukrainian origin.

Life

Tiempo came from a Jewish family with roots in the Ukraine . Because of the recurring pogroms, his family emigrated to Hamburg and, after a short stay, to the USA . Since there were problems with the immigration authorities there, the family traveled to Argentina without further ado.

At the age of 21, Tiempo published the anthology “Exposición de la actual poesía argentina” in 1927 together with his friend Pedro Juan Vignale . This publication is still considered important today, as all the avant-garde and socially critical writers of the Grupo Boedo were recorded there.

However, Tiempo had suddenly become famous with a literary scandal. In 1926 he published the book of poetry "Versos de una ..." under the pseudonym Clara Beter in the Claridad publishing house of the Grupo Boedo . The apocryphal poems of the alleged prostitutes were very successful and were also highly praised by official literary criticism. After Clara Beter received several marriage proposals, Tiempo exposed his fraud. Years later, Clara Beter was a controversial topic and in 1941 the play "Clara Beter vive" addressed this literary fraud.

In the 30s Tiempo worked mostly as an actor and wrote scripts for over fifty films. In addition to his quite independent literary work, Tiempo also acted for some time as a columnist and editor-in-chief of the cultural supplements of newspapers and magazines such as "La Vanguardia", "Crítica", "El Sol", and " La Prensa ".

At the age of 74, César Tiempo died on October 24, 1980 in Buenos Aires, where he found his final resting place.
