C-sine motor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The C-Sinus motor is an electric motor developed by Märklin for model railways . It works according to the three-phase principle . Märklin describes the engine as a high-performance engine, and company marketing describes it as one of the best engines the company has produced to date. It replaces the previously installed drum and disc collector motors .

function

The C-Sinus motor consists of a stator with nine coils on which a rotor with twelve permanent magnets sits like a bell. A rotating magnetic field ( rotating field ) is generated in the stator , which drives the rotor due to the magnetic forces. Due to the uniform because of the numerous coils and magnets magnetic flux are torque and efficiency of the engine particularly high. The rotation is passed on to the drive wheels by means of a pinion via a spur gear . For motor control, control electronics connected to the coils via a foil cable regulate the rotating field. The speed is reported back to the control electronics via Hall sensors .

Advantages and disadvantages

Due to the high torque even in the low speed range and the favorable efficiency, the motor requires less energy overall to set the rotor in motion. Since the coils are firmly mounted, there is no mechanical transition ( sliding contact ) of the electrical supply, which makes the motor maintenance and wear-free. The speed can be regulated exactly, it has a high tractive force and works quietly.

The favorable electromechanical properties, however, come at the cost of reduced self-braking power, which means that there is a risk that a de-energized locomotive will continue to drive on the slope. When energized, however, this is compensated for by the control electronics.
