Charles Donald Bateman , called Don Bateman, (born March 8, 1932 in Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian-American engineer, inventor of the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS).

Bateman studied electrical engineering at the University of Saskatchewan , then went to Sundstrand in Illinois and then (from 1960) to Honeywell International , where he became chief engineer for flight safety and, in the late 1960s, developed GPWS that was continuously improved at Honeywell ( Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System , EGPWS from 1996 and others). The system was prescribed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for larger aircraft from 1974 , which greatly reduced the cause of accidents of controlled flight into terrain (CFIT).

Other inventions related to B. Warning systems for drop in cabin pressure, winch shear and stall , autopilot technology and head-up displays .

He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and in 2010 received the National Medal of Technology . He holds approximately 40 US patents and 80 patents outside the US. He is a US citizen.
