The Clube Atlético Ypiranga , often called CAY for short , is a sports club from the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo , which attracted attention in the first half of the last century primarily through its football team . After the club, which was founded in the city center, initially had several homes, it moved to the Ipiranga district in 1929, after a merger with Nacional, Independência, Silex and América, which originally served as the site of Brazil's declaration of independence, when the club was named.

The CA Ypiranga was founded on June 10, 1906 by renegades from SC Germânia and other associations. In 1909, under President Adolfo Wellische, the club's management decided to join the Paulista de Futebol League and thus take part in the São Paulo state championship. In April 1910, the team qualified for participation in the league by winning two games in a small elimination round. The club's soccer team soon became one of the strongest teams in the São Paulo League. Ypiranga did not win a title, but was runner-up at the state championship in 1913, 1935 and 1936. In 1919, Ypiranga defeated Palestra Italia at the inauguration of the Parque Antártica stadium, known these days as SE Palmeiras , with 6: 1.

In the heyday there were also some historically noteworthy players for Ypiranga on the ball. Brazil's first star Arthur Friedenreich was the club's top scorer in 1914 and 1917. By 1948, three other Ypiranga players were top scorer of the São Paulo state championship. Also Moacyr Barbosa , the hapless goalkeeper of the national team of Brazil in the 1950 FIFA World Cup , played previously at the club.

After relegation from the second division in 1958, the professional team was dissolved. In the last game on December 14, 1958, CAY separated with the Jabaquara AC 3: 3. Nowadays, the CA Ypiranga offers not only amateur football but also sports such as pool , snooker , swimming , tennis , volleyball and squash .
