The history of CBS News Radio is closely linked to the development of one of the oldest media networks in the United States. With the expansion of CBS, the demands on the radio news of the CBS stations also increased . In the 1930s, the network brought the renowned newspaper journalists Edward Klauber and Paul White to set up a radio newsroom. The voices of CBS journalists HV Kaltenborn, Edward R. Murrow , William L. Shirer , Eric Sevareid , Robert Trout and many others could be heard on CBS Radio News .

In the course of time, other radio stations began to take over the CBS news. The fact that CBS did technical pioneering work in the development of new transmission channels also contributed to the spread; the network was a leader in international broadcasting via shortwave and the introduction of VHF radio and later on television in America.

When CBS Radio News started, the name was changed to CBS News Radio .

In 2016, CEO Leslie Moonves announced that the group would sell its radio division. While the parent company was preparing its IPO , it was announced on February 2, 2017 that the competing company Entercom is taking over all CBS radio stations. The radio news, however, stayed with CBS News and most of the former CBS stations and Entercom's stations continue to take over CBS News Radio .
