The locomotives No. 1 to 9 of the Compagnie de Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopien de Jibuti à Addis Abeba ( CFE ) were meter-gauge steam locomotives developed by the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) , which were mainly used on the lower, low-incline section of the Djibouti railway line –Addis Ababa were installed.
history
The Compagnie Impériale des Chemins de fer Ethiopiens (CIE), the predecessor company of CFE, ordered six locomotives from SLM for the first 106 km stretch between Djibouti and Dauenlé. They were designed as locomotives with a 1'C wheel arrangement and a four-axle tender. The first four locomotives were equipped with a two-cylinder wet steam engine, the remaining two were already superheaters .
Two more locomotives were to follow in 1901 to operate the line that was extended to Dire Dawa , but the ship with the locomotives sank in the sea on the way to Ethiopia.
In 1912 three new locomotives were built for the CFE - two as replacements for the lost ones and one additional. The roof shape of the driver's cab was slightly changed in these locomotives compared to the first series.
The first four locomotives with wet steam engines retired from operation in the 1930s and were scrapped. Their tenders continued to be used for the 1'D locomotives with numbers 414 to 419 that were delivered at the end of the 1930s.
The last locomotive of the series was parked in the early 1950s.
