The Covasna forest railway was a Romanian forest and industrial railway owned by the state company Căile Ferate Forestiere (CFF). It ran on the Bosnian gauge of 760 millimeters and opened up the Valea Zânelor .
history
The Covasna forest railway was opened in sections from 1898, initially it was a horse-drawn railway . In later years, the extensive route network covered around 200 kilometers. Connections to the Romanian State Railways and three- rail tracks existed in Covasna and Nehoiu .
At the “Siclau” station, a wide-gauge funicular connected the lower with the upper adhesion section, there a height difference of more than 350 meters had to be overcome. The freight platforms were constructed in such a way that they could each transport a flat wagon or two wooden stools. Until recently, the wagons were maneuvered with horses at the stations of the inclined elevator. A severe forest fire destroyed the mountain station in 1996. It was rebuilt, but from then on it was very prone to failure. The entire forest railway was shut down in 1999 after a flood .
Because the municipalities of Covasna and Comandau were temporarily interested in restarting the railway for tourist reasons, five steam locomotives were retained. They are stored in the two depots of the forest railway. The track system was no longer maintained, however, roads were partially built on the railway lines and track material was stolen by metal thieves . On a private initiative, a short section of the valley section and a refurbished section near Comandau are occasionally operated. The inclined elevator, which is protected as a technical monument, is still completely preserved, but left to decay.
