The CHRIS study (Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol - Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol) is a cohort and long-term study in the Vinschgau in South Tyrol , in which 13,393 people of age were questioned about their living conditions and their medical history and medically examined. The study began in August 2011 and the second investigation is due to begin in April 2019. The aim of the study is to conduct detailed research on common diseases, with a focus on neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases.

The study examines the development of diseases including the risk factors that promote this development. In addition, the role of genes and environmental influences to which humans are exposed as well as their lifestyle and social factors should be determined. Based on the results of the study, measures and strategies for improved prevention, early detection and treatment of diseases are to be developed.

Sponsorship and funding

The study is a joint interdisciplinary project by the Institute for Biomedicine of Eurac Research in collaboration with the South Tyrolean medical company . The CHRIS study is financed as part of the basic funding from Eurac Research by the Innovation, Research, Development and Cooperatives Department of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol .

First investigation (2011-2018)

The study was carried out in the CHRIS center in the Silandro Hospital, where up to 10 participants were examined every morning. After the appointment was made, the interested persons were sent a comprehensive explanation of the planned examination and a nutritional questionnaire. Based on this and other information (information film), the participant signed an informed consent at the beginning of the examination day. The following examination program was then carried out:

  • Blood and urine sample (a total of 73 clinical parameters are measured)
  • Detailed electrocardiogram,
  • Measuring body height, body weight, body composition (impedance analysis),
  • Measuring blood pressure,
  • Determination of the pressure pain threshold,
  • Examinations of movement disorders and age-related diseases,
  • Detailed discussion about your own health, lifestyle (exercise, diet, environmental influences) and your medical history.

Second investigation (2019-)

All 13,393 participants in the first examination are invited to participate with a minimum interval between the examinations. The exact procedure has not yet been published. It is planned to carry out more instrumental measurements in order to obtain more information about the health status of the participants.

Scientific peculiarities

There are numerous other population studies in Europe and internationally. The CHRIS study has the following specific characteristics:

  • Homogeneity of the catchment area in the Alps and the environmental factors for the target population,
  • Participants are mainly families, several generations of a family, homogeneity of the descent of the target population,
  • Closeness between researchers and participants,
  • Close cooperation with family doctors and on-site hospital,
  • The selection of the studies is based on the structure of other European studies in order to make the data basically comparable,
  • In the course of the study, all biosamples are collected and stored in the Biobank Südtirol and are available for scientific research.
  • Very high participation of the target population in Vinschgau with 13,393 of about 30,000 inhabitants (~ 44%).

Data protection and ethics

Building on the experience gained in the GenNova study (implemented in 2002/03, 1,300 people in Martell Valley , Stilfs and Langtaufers ), an ethics protocol was drawn up before the investigation began, on the basis of which a declaration of consent ( informed consent ) and data protection are implemented. The rights to change decisions, withdraw consent to participate and destroy the data or samples are defined in the ethics protocol. The exchange with research partners within the international scientific community takes place only after approval of a prior request in accordance with the regulations for access to data and samples.

Activities and initiatives

Information events were held in the municipalities from 2011 to 2017 to inform the interested population. In cooperation with representatives of Vinschger associations, the health initiative “Just do it!” Was founded in 2015, which held a health day in the same year and in 2017. At the end of the first study phase and before the start of the second study phase, there was an information conference at the end of 2018 “ Together for everyone's health! ".
