history

CHUM-FM went on air on September 1, 1963 with an output of 18,000 watts. The studios were located at 1331 Yongee Street. Initially, CHUM-FM broadcast a classical music format. On March 21, 1966, the transmission power was increased from 18,000 to 54,000 watts. In 1968 the transmitter got permission to change the transmitter system and at the same time to increase the output to 100,000 watts. The station also moved into a new building in the Manufacture's Life Building at 250 Bloor Street East. In July of the same year, the station changed its broadcast format and began broadcasting Progressive Rock , the predecessor of the adult album alternative format known today. That means it broadcasts a wide variety of different styles of music.

On December 14, 1973, the radio station was selected from among various other radio stations to install its transmission systems on the roof of the CN Tower. The broadcast began on May 31, 1976 with a reduced power of 40,000 watts.

In 1978, the station expanded its broadcast format and introduced the Top 30 Singles Chart Show. A television broadcast of the top 30 singles charts was later broadcast by CityTv, which broadcast the music videos for the singles charts that were then placed. With the takeover of CityTv by Rogers Communications, the broadcast of the top 30 show was stopped. In December 1984, the station changed its broadcast format to Adult Contemporary .

On May 26, 1998, CHUM-FM received a license to broadcast in Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) using the Eureka-147 system. This was also installed on the CN Tower and transmitted on the frequency 1456.34 M Hz with an output of 5.084 watts.

The station began broadcasting hip-hop , reggae and dance music in early / mid-2000 . The reason for the change in the broadcast format resulted from the fact that one wanted to address more younger listeners with the broadcast format. CHUM-FM began broadcasting the American Top 40 .

During the Canadian Music Awards celebrations on March 8, 2007, CHUM-FM was named Radio Station of the Year.
