The CISPA - Helmholtz Center for Information Security gGmbH is a major German federal research institution and researches information security in all its facets. Since January 1, 2019, it has been part of the research institutions of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers .

history

CISPA emerged from the BMBF Competence Center Center for IT Security, Privacy and Accountability , which has existed since 2011 .

The foundation was announced in March 2017 by the federal and state governments and, following a process led by a transfer commission, was formally decided by the general meeting of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers in September 2018.

CISPA is organized in the legal form of a GmbH . The shareholders are the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the federal state of Saarland (10%). Michael Backes is the founding director . On January 1, 2019, it was officially accepted as the 19th center in the Helmholtz Association and has since been called "CISPA - Helmholtz Center for Information Security".

financing

The basic funding should amount to more than 50 million euros per year after a steadily increasing growth phase.

Research mission and areas of work

The task is to deal with fundamental topics of cybersecurity research in the age of digitization . The spectrum ranges from theoretical to empirical research. It is rooted in computer science with links to medicine , law, and the social sciences .

There are five research areas: secure and data protection-friendly information processing, reliable security guarantees, detection and prevention of cyber attacks, secure mobile and autonomous systems, and empirical and usable security.

Institutional cooperation (selection)

CISPA Stanford Center

The CISPA Stanford Center is an institutional cooperation between CISPA and Stanford University . It enables outstanding researchers to work for a period of two years at Stanford University as a visiting assistant professor in the field of cybersecurity after completing their doctorate and then return to Germany in order to continue their research as senior scientists at CISPA .

Helmholtz Medical Security, Privacy, and AI Research Center (HMSP)

The Helmholtz Medical Security, Privacy, and AI Research Center , or HMSP for short, is a joint research initiative of six Helmholtz centers: CISPA, German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases , German Cancer Research Center , Helmholtz Center Munich , Helmholtz Center for Infection Research and Max Delbrück Center for molecular medicine .

It deals with the research of new methods for the trustworthy processing of medical data, the development of data protection compliant protection mechanisms as soon as such data is collected and shared, as well as the analysis of security and data protection risks for critical system and software components in medical applications.

Teaching

As part of the university cooperation with Saarland University , CISPA has initiated a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity and a master's degree in entrepreneurial cybersecurity. The aim of the bachelor's program is to train cybersecurity experts immediately after entering the university. The master’s course, on the other hand, combines the content of cybersecurity with a dedicated start-up project.
