The CIVETS states

CIVETS stands for a group of rapidly developing economies - Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa - and is summarized under the acronym CIVETS. The six states are referred to as the new emerging economies for which a major economic upturn is expected. The synonym is the first letter in the English language of these countries:

The abbreviation was coined by Michael Geoghegan , the managing director of the British bank HSBC . For the countries involved, the designation Schleichkatzen-States is used, after the civet , English civet , a type of crawling cat .
