CLUMEQ
The CLUMEQ supercomputer was completed by Sun Microsystems in 2009 and is located in Québec , Canada . The basis for the new data center of the CLUMEQ Supercomputing Center is a silo that until recently housed a particle accelerator .
Structure and equipment
Building a data center in a silo was a whole new task for the developers. The advantage of this design is that the systems can be cooled much better than in a conventional data center. The computers were arranged in a ring on three floors. This creates a cold air zone on the outside of the round structure.
The computer type belongs to the Sun Blade System (model Sun Blade 6048). The main memory has a size of 19200 GB, the processor is an Intel EM64T Xeon X55xx (Nehalem-EP) 2800 MHz (11.2 GFlops).
Research areas
The CLUMEQ supercomputer is used for research and analysis in the u. a. used in the following areas:
- Materials research and nanotechnology
- Astrophysics and cosmology
- Climate and weather forecasts
- Life sciences
- Bioinformatics
- to calculate the state variables of flows
