Ore loading ramp, industrial historical monument

The Cable Inglés , also Embarcadero de Mineral “El Alquife” or Cargadero de Mineral , is a pier in Almería that served as an ore loading ramp from 1904 to 1970 . The facility is considered an industrial historical monument and is currently being restored.

history

With the construction of the Linares Baeza – Almería railway line , the removal of production from the ore mines at Alquife near Guadix was made easier. The mines were operated by the Scottish Alquife Mines and Railway Company Limited , based in Glasgow . The company built an ore loading ramp on the east side of the port of Almería between 1902 and 1904 to facilitate ore loading. The construction work was carried out by the Scottish construction company Alexander Finlay & Co., Ltd from Motherwell . When the plant was commissioned, it was one of the largest in the entire Mediterranean region .

The plant was in operation until September 1970 and was then left to decay. In 1998 the structure was included in the list of buildings worthy of protection. The loading ramp should be accessible to the public from spring 2021.

technology

The plant consists of two ore silos, each of which consists of 20 hoppers lined with wood. The ore trains reached the top of the structure via a 900 m long 22.5 ‰ steep ramp, where they can discharge the ore into the hoppers below. Each funnel had a lowerable chute through which the contents could enter the ship by gravity .
