Cactus Hill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cactus Hill is an archaeological site in the United States . Located in eastern Virginia , the course is on sand dunes above the Nottoway River about 70 km south of Richmond . The site is owned by the International Paper Corporation .

The place had various levels of early settlement. Archaic material lies beneath fluted stone tools dating from the Clovis culture and dating to 10,920 BP . A lower level yields artifacts that contain hand axes dated between 15,000 and 17,000 years ago. White pine coal from the range of fireplaces of this level has a date of 15,070 years BP. Other findings of charcoal deposits even date back to 19,700 years ago, but they could also have occurred in forest fires. Cactus Hill was reasonably considered to be the oldest archaeological site in North America in 2003. Since then , finds have been made in Paisley Caves , Oregon, and Bluefish Caves , Yukon, that are older than the known dates at Cactus Hill.
