Caesar Scharff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caesar Scharff (born December 22, 1864 in Hamburg , † October 21, 1902 in Alt-Rahlstedt ) was a German sculptor. Scharff was a member of the established Hamburg Artists 'Association from 1832 , but also had contact with the more modern Hamburg Artists' Club from 1897. Stylistically, his works can be assigned to Art Nouveau .

Works and activities

Scharff's creative focus was cemetery art, many of his sculptures are on the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof in Hamburg. He caused a sensation with the revealing representation of his characters. Their erotic charisma was often felt to be inappropriate to the culture of mourning.
