The Cafe Kies is a listed building in the Magdeburg district of Westerhüsen .

Architecture and history

The building is located at Holsteiner Straße 1 on the square-like extension of the junction between Holsteiner Straße and Welsleber Straße. It was built in 1894 by Andreas Meinecke in what was then Feldstrasse and has elements of eclecticism , neo-renaissance and neo-baroque . The building arose from the original components of the old station building of the neighboring Magdeburg Südost train station from 1868 and represented an extensive reconstruction of this building. The two-storey brick building served as a residential building with a stately appearance. For a long time the building was also used for gastronomy. On May 8, 1905, Andreas Meinecke opened a restaurant in the building, according to which a corresponding plan had existed since January 31, 1905. Since he was also the owner of a nearby gravel pit , he was called Kiesmeinecke in Westerhüsen , from which the name Cafe Kies arose, which can still be read in weathered letters below the northern front gable on the east side.

In 1906 the building was given a risalit . A wing was also added to the south side. Since then it has been a semi-detached house. The two halves are symmetrical to each other and each have a risalit, which is crowned by a flat gable .

On December 30, 1920, a meeting between the board of the Magdeburg tenants' association and Salbker tenants took place in Café Kies. As a result, it was decided to found a local group southeast.

On February 22, 2012, 400 cannabis plants and two boxes with parts of plants that had already been harvested were found during a house search in the cellar of the house . A preliminary arrest was made.

The house, which was still partially inhabited until 2012, was then empty and in need of renovation. It was completely renovated from 2015 to 2018. Rooms are rented in the house. On February 11, 2018, a café opened again on the ground floor of the house, but it no longer exists. The house continues to be operated as a pension.
