Cairn by park

The Cairn of Park (also called Park of Tongland) in the remainder of a four- poster stone circle ( English Four-poster stone circle ), also "sky stone circle ", north of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland .

The remains of a stone circle , which was listed by HAW Burl as "Himmelssteinkreis", stands on the crest of Tongland Hill, about 200 meters west of Park. In 1911 there were three stones that formed an equilateral triangle measuring almost 5.0 m. The northernmost of these was rebuilt by Coles when it was overturned at the site. The west stone is about 1.05 m high and 1.6 m in circumference. The east stone is about 0.95 high and 1.85 m in circumference, while the re-erected north stone is 0.9 m high and 1.8 m in circumference.

The excavation, as a reaction to the overturning of one of the three stones, has shown that the site consists of an oval cairn in which the menhirs ( English standing stones ) stand. The stump of the fourth post was discovered in the cairn. A small cremation was uncovered under the cairn. The finds made there include a collar urn , ( English Collared urn ), a Kordonurne ( English Cordoned urn ) and a bowl.

context

Four-Poster Stone Circles are mainly in Scotland , particularly in Perthshire ( stone circles of Carse Farm , Stone Circle Ferntower found). The Goatstones in Northumberland , the Bordley Stone Circle in North Yorkshire and the Four Stones in Wales are three of the few examples outside of Scotland and Ireland (6 examples - e.g. Cappaboy Beg , Reenkilla and Robinstown Great ).
