Cajeput oil

Cajeput oil is an essential oil made by steam distilling the leaves and smaller branches of various cajeput trees such as Melaleuca leucadendra and Melaleuca cajuputi . Cajeput is a main component of olbas oil and is also contained in Tiger Balm .

The name Cajeput is a Germanization of Kayuputi , which has its origin in Sulawesi ( Indonesia ) and means "white wood". Accordingly, the name in English is cajuput oil .

The oil has a scent reminiscent of eucalyptus , is strongly antiseptic and contains high levels of terpenes . The colorless, water-insoluble liquid with a density of 0.92 g · cm −3 consists mainly (up to 40–60%) of eucalyptol (1,8-cineol); many other substances are also included.
