Calamia is a genus of the Apameini tribefrom the moth family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

The genus includes medium-sized to large moths with a long body. The forewings are relatively long and slender. The head is relatively large, the forehead smooth, broad and round. The antennae of the males are finely serrated on both sides with long cilia . Other derived characteristics are peculiarities in the male and female genitals.

Way of life, occurrence and geographical distribution

The genus loves warmth and prefers open landscapes. The caterpillars mostly live on grasses. The genus is widespread in the Palearctic.

Systematics

The genus is very closely related to the genera Sidemia and Hampsonicola (formerly Hedina ), as well as Crypsedra and Staurophora . The position in the Apameini tribe is relatively secure. The genus includes five species:

The position of the Apameini tribe has not yet been conclusively clarified. In the past it was mostly attributed to the subfamily Hadeninae. The newer classifications suggest belonging to the subfamily Xyleninae (Fibiger and Hacker, 2007).
