Calandretas (Occitan: little lark) are French private schools where the Occitan language is the language of instruction alongside French . In addition, some state schools offer bilingual instruction .

There are similarities to the Occitan Calandretas in other parts of France, e.g. B. with the brittophone divan schools of Brittany .

history

The first Calandreta school was founded in Pau in 1980. In 1989 there were already 10 schools. In 1993 professionalization begins: the umbrella organization is developed.

Nowadays there are 65 primary schools and 3 secondary schools.

Outline of the Calandretas

The calandretas are quite a loose organization. It unites the educational principle and language. The schools are largely self-organized and the school staff guarantees that the principles of the Calandreta Confederation are implemented. The schools enjoy a high degree of autonomy.

School program

The Calandretas belong to the current of secular private schools that teach in the minority language. Teaching is based on the immersion method . That means that the children come into contact with Occitan from kindergarten age. French is introduced bit by bit and is not taught in class until the second grade. Classes are in Occitan, so that the language is not only a language that has been learned, but also the language of instruction. This distinguishes this school system from others where Occitan is only a foreign language learned and hardly comes into contact with other subjects. The system assumes that the students spend all of their school time in a calandreta from the start.

The local dialect of Occitan is taught in each case.

It is possible to go through the entire school career in the Calandreta system and complete the Baccalauréat .

activism

The Calandretas see themselves as the core of the Occitan cultural movement. They take part in cultural life and have a pro-regional attitude. The Calandretas are dependent on cultural festivals which bring them publicity and donations.
