Calculator

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Calculator is the Latin term for a Rechenmeister or mathematician . The term is derived from Calculus (Latin: stone that was used to calculate).

In the Roman Empire the calculator was a slave , later also a freedman or freeborn, who kept the accounts ( bookkeeping ) for his master . At the same time he was often the math teacher for his children.

In the early modern period it was a name for the accounting officer or auditor of an entrepreneur or company.
