The Caledonia class consisted of nine first class ships of the line with 120 guns, designed by Sir William Rule for the Royal Navy . Originally a tenth ship (HMS Royal Frederick ) was ordered, which was launched in 1833 as HMS Queen and built according to a different design.

variants

The armament of the first three ships of this class remained the same, with the exception of an increase in firepower by installing six 18-pounders instead of just two on the poop deck. The armament of the fourth ship, the HMS Royal George , was changed significantly: two of the 32-pounders on the lower cannon deck were replaced with two 68-pound carronades , and all the cannons on the middle and upper cannon decks were replaced with the same number of 32-pounders . Four of the original six 12-pounders on the quarterdeck also became 32-pounders and the remaining two were upgraded to 18-pounders. In contrast, two 12-pounders on the forecastle and the carronades on the poop deck were removed.

The remaining five ships were built as a slightly widened version, this sub-class was armed in the same way as the last standard version, the HMS Royal George . Except for the HMS Caledonia itself, all other ships were converted to steam-powered warships with screw drives.
