The California Plateau is an approximately 3000 m high, wavy and ice-covered plateau in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . It lies on the eastern flank of the Scott Glacier with an extension of about 50 km in length and between 3 and 20 km in width. At the southern end of the plateau, Mount Blackburn rises to a height of 3275 m . The northwest side is characterized by the steep cliffs of the Watson Escarpment , while the southeast side slopes gently to the level of the central polar plateau .
The area was mapped through the United States Geological Survey and aerial photography from the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1967 in honor of the University of California , from which numerous scientists from different research disciplines working in Antarctica came.
