Callinicus (Exarch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Callinicus ( Greek Καλλίνικος Kallinikos ) was an Eastern Roman Patricius and exarch of Ravenna from 596/597 to 602/603 .

Callinicus was the successor of Romanus and is first attested as exarch in June 597. He is the recipient of two letters from Pope Gregory I and is mentioned by the Pope in other of his letters. Callinicus campaigned with Gregory, ultimately successfully, for the recognition of Bishop Maximus of Salona.

The historian Paulus Diaconus mentions Patricius Gallinicus ( Hist. Lang. , 4, 20) when he invaded the city of Parma in 601, despite an armistice he concluded with the Longobards in 598 , and the daughter of the Longobard king Agilulf with her husband led to Ravenna . This affront was the trigger renewed fighting with the Lombards, which bound the Roman forces over charge in Italy since Callinicus also incursions of the Slavs in Istria had to fend off (see Maurice's Balkan campaigns ) and then to the east to fight with the new Persian again Sassanidenreich came (see Roman-Persian Wars ).

Different versions of the end of the Callinicus circulate in the sources. It is most likely that Callinicus was replaced by the Eastern Roman emperor ( Phocas or Maurikios ). In his place came Smaragdus , who had already held this office before.
