Calliphylloceras demidoffi is a species of the ammonites (Ammonoidea) from the Jura . The animals had the typical involute, externally rounded shell of the genus Callipyhlloceras and reached a maximum size of 60 cm shell diameter. The species was found as a fossil in Europe , India, and Madagascar . The species was first described in 1842 by Louis Rousseau .

features

Calliphylloceras demidoffi showed an involute, compressed casing. The outside of the shell was rounded. The stone core, i.e. the inner cast of the shell, has a smooth surface and shows S-shaped constrictions. These constrictions can partly be seen as bulges on the back surface of the bowls. The shell sculpture is formed by filigree growth strips. The praises are severely slashed and end in arched tips. The size of the phragmocone in Oxford Clay is up to 45 cm, which corresponds to a complete case diameter of around 60 cm. Most fossils of the species are much smaller, however.

Stratigraphy and geographic distribution

Calliphylloceras demidoffi occurs in layers from the upper Bathonian to the lower Oxfordian and is thus a species of the Middle Jurassic and the beginning of the Upper Jurassic . The ammonites are found in Western and Eastern Europe, India and Madagascar.

Taxonomy

The species was first described in 1842 by Louis Rousseau as Ammonites demidoffi . The specific epithet honors Anatole Demidoff di San Donato , the editor of the volume in which the description appeared.
