The Callo Theater is a nationally known theater project for teenagers and young adults.

history

In 2001 the theater was founded in the Marcel Callo House in Castrop-Rauxel , a youth center. In its first and constituent season, the Callo Theater ensemble took part in the “Theater gegen Rechts” project. As part of this NRW-wide project, Jan Vollmer, the first director of the Callo Theater, staged Bertolt Brecht's fear and misery of the Third Reich .

In the years that followed, the special concept of the Callo Theater slowly developed. Encouraged by the success and very good reviews of the fear and misery of the Third Reich , it was decided to continue running the theater. It was clear from the start that the Callo Theater should be more than ordinary amateur theater.

concept

"Theater for and by young people is more than occupational therapy and social work" and in the sense of Georges Clemenceau "The theater is too important to be left to the theater scholars" became the defining principles of the Callo theater. Consciously avant-garde methods, multimedia and clear social statements, less role work and more work on the play as a total work of art became the trademarks of the Callo Theater. The great heterogeneity of the group is the greatest asset of the Callo theater, as it makes theater at the state of art, so to speak, by carpenters, students, economists, mathematicians etc. for carpenters, students, economists, mathematicians etc. The concept is consciously understood as an alternative to theater-pedagogical functionalization tendencies in the art form theater.
