Calophasia platyptera , sometimes also called the broad-winged snapdragon owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 30 millimeters. The forewings are usually ash gray in color and show indistinct striped, dark gray, blue-gray or brown-gray interferences. Blemishes are missing as well as cross lines. A crescent-shaped, dark drawing stands out slightly above the center of the inner edge . The hind wings are colored whitish without drawing, somewhat darkened at the outer edge. The dark veins stand out clearly. Hood-like tufts of hair on the head and thorax are characteristic . The proboscis is well developed.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars have a gray-white basic color and are provided with yellow longitudinal lines interrupted at the segment incisions as well as black spots on the back and many small, also black side dots.
Doll
The doll is yellow-brown in color. The proboscis sheath is extraordinarily long and reaches the end of the abdomen.
distribution and habitat
The occurrence of Calophasia platyptera extends through the entire Mediterranean area to Asia Minor and Armenia . The species has also been found in Austria and Switzerland . It prefers to colonize warm slopes, steppe heaths, gardens and parks.
Way of life
Depending on the region, Calophasia platyptera develops two or three generations per year, the adults of which can be found from April to October. They visit different flowers during the day to take in nectar and also appear in artificial light sources at night . The caterpillars feed on the leaves and flowers of various snapdragons ( Antirrhinum ) or toadflax species ( Linaria ). The species overwinters as a pupa.
