Company history

The company was founded in 1939 by Kenneth Becker as Calumet Manufacturing Company in Chicago and initially sold sporting goods, later also photographic accessories and darkroom equipment. From 1955 Calumet took over the business area of view cameras from Kodak and in 1980 expanded the business activities to a full-range supplier in the field of professional photography. In March 2014, the offices in the US, as well as the local site were, in the course of insolvency after Chapter 7 closed.

Expansion to Great Britain took place relatively early after the company was founded. In Germany, Calumet has been represented in Hamburg (the German twin city of Chicago) since 1990 , and later in Berlin and Düsseldorf . The company only became more important in 2004 with the purchase of the insolvent Professional Photo Service. The branches of PPS were partly taken over (photo Elgas in Munich), partly consolidated with existing Calumet branches (Hamburg and Düsseldorf), partly closed (Frankfurt, film art in Munich ). The company currently has 9 branches in Great Britain, 2 in the Netherlands, 1 in Belgium and seven in Germany (Hamburg, Essen , Berlin, Düsseldorf, Munich and Stuttgart and Frankfurt). The branches outside the USA are not affected by the bankruptcy of the US company.

Information on the origin of the name Calumet is not available. However, there is a "Calumet Park" in Chicago, "Calumet Heights", and several communities with this name in the surrounding area (Calumet City, Calumet Park). One version of the meaning of the name Calumet is "pipe of peace" in a North American Indian language.
