Caluromyinae is a taxonomic group in the order opossum-like . The taxon is referred to as a subfamily or family in various papers.

These opossum rats reach a head body length of about 30 cm and a tail length of up to 45 cm. The top is covered with thick woolly fur. Another characteristic is the dark, vertical stripe from the nose to the top of the head. In almost all species, the females have a fully developed pouch. Only in the yellow woolly rat ( Caluromys philander ) are there skin flaps on the belly that protect the young animals. The most important differences to other opossum rats consist in a different structure of the ankle joint and in a different karyotype .

The distribution area extends from southern Mexico through Central America and northern South America to Argentina .

Bandage wool pouch rats ( Caluromysiops ), with a species

In older works the bush-tailed opossum ( Glironia venusta ) is also included. According to recent research, it represents a subfamily of its own.
